3.0 LEARNING THEORIES

Learning theory describes how students absorb, process, and retain their knowledge during learning. Cognitive, emotional and environmental influences, as well as prior experience, all play a part in how understanding, or a world view, is acquired or changed and knowledge and also skills retained. Behaviorists look at learning as an aspect of conditioning and advocate a system of rewards and targets in education. Educators who embrace cognitive theory believe that the definition of learning as a change in behavior is too narrow and study the learner rather than the environment. Meanwhile, those who advocate constructivism believe that a learner's ability to learn actually relies largely on what they already know and understand and the acquisition of knowledge should be an individually tailored process of construction. There are three learning theories,

        3.1 Behavioral Theory

Learning and behavior changes are acquired by linking stimuli and responses. Learning is defined by the outward expression of new behaviors. Focuses solely on observable behaviors. A biological basis for learning and is context-independent.

         3.2 Cognitivist Theory

Learning is internal and is a result of student processing and organizing new information. It is a discovery learning that anybody is able to learn anything at any age, provided it is stated in terms they can understand.

         3.3 Constructivist Theory

Knowledge is constructed by adapting new information based on previous experience. More like how learner interprets the new information and applies to their own reality.

In conclusion, all students are intrinsically motivated to self-actualization or self-learn. Learning is dependent upon meeting a hierarchy of needs such as physiological, psychological and intellectual. Most importantly, learning should be reinforced.
